Introduction: You Don’t Have to Be Perfect. You Just Have to Start.
“How to Pray as a New Muslim?”
If you just said Shahada, this is the #1 question in your head.
YouTube has 20 videos. Your friend prays fast. The mosque looks intimidating.
Breathe.
God does not expect perfection from you on day 1. He expects effort.
This is a Step-by-Step Salah Tutorial written like a friend sitting next to you. No Arabic pressure. No shame. Just how to start praying today, even if you only know 2 words.
Before We Pray - 3 Things You Must Know
- What is Salah? Salah is 5 meetings with God a day. Not a performance. A conversation. It’s 5 minutes where the world stops and it’s just you and Him.
- When are the 5 Prayers?
- Fajr: Before sunrise
- Dhuhr: Midday
- Asr: Afternoon
- Maghrib: After sunset
- Isha: Night Download "Muslim Pro" app. It will notify you.
- Do I need to pray in Arabic right away? No. For your first week, you can make dua in English. But you must learn Al-Fatiha in Arabic because it’s required. We’ll do that together below.
Step 1 - Wudu: The 2-Minute Wash
You can’t pray without being clean. This is Wudu.
Step-by-Step Wudu:
- Intention: In your heart say "I’m making wudu for prayer". No need to say it out loud.
- Wash hands 3 times
- Rinse mouth 3 times
- Rinse nose 3 times
- Wash face 3 times
- Wash arms to elbows 3 times, right then left
- Wipe head once with wet hands
- Wipe ears once
- Wash feet to ankles 3 times, right then left
Tip for New Muslims: If you mess up the order, it’s okay. God looks at intention.
Step 2 - Facing the Qiblah and Getting Ready
- Find Qiblah: Open your phone compass. Face Makkah.
- Find a clean place: A rug, towel, even your office floor.
- Cover properly: Men: cover from navel to knees. Women: cover everything except face and hands.
- Make intention: "I intend to pray Dhuhr, 4 rakahs, for Allah."
That’s it. You’re ready.
Step-by-Step Salah Tutorial - The 4 Rakah Prayer
Let’s do Dhuhr together. 4 rakahs. I’ll write what to say and what to do.
A rakah = one cycle of standing, bowing, prostrating.
RAKAH 1
- Stand and raise hands: Say "Allahu Akbar" = God is Greatest
- Put right hand over left on your chest
- Say Opening Supplication: "Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdik..." New Muslim tip: Skip this first week if it’s too much.
- Say Al-Fatiha - You MUST learn this: "Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil Alameen Ar-Rahman ir-Raheem Maliki Yawmid Deen Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'een Ihdinas siratal mustaqeem Siratal ladheena an'amta alayhim Ghayril maghdoobi alayhim wa lad daalleen. Ameen"
- Say a short Surah: Like "Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad" "Qul huwa Allahu ahad Allahus samad Lam yalid wa lam yoolad Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad"
- Bow - Ruku: Say "Allahu Akbar", bend, hands on knees. Say 3 times "Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem" = Glory to my Lord, the Great
- Stand up: Say "Sami' Allahu liman hamidah" = Allah hears the one who praises Him. Then "Rabbana wa lakal hamd" = Our Lord, to You is all praise
- Prostrate - Sujood: "Allahu Akbar", go down. Forehead, nose, hands, knees, toes on ground. Say 3 times "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" = Glory to my Lord, the Most High
- Sit up: "Allahu Akbar". Say "Rabbighfirli" = My Lord, forgive me
- Second Sujood: Same as above
That’s 1 rakah done.
RAKAHS 2, 3, 4
- Rakah 2: Same as 1. But after second sujood, sit and say Tashahhud: "At-tahiyyatu lillahi was salawatu wat tayyibat. Assalamu alayka ayyuhan nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Assalamu alayna wa ala ibadillahis saliheen. Ashhadu an la ilaha illAllah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh."
- Rakah 3 and 4: Just Al-Fatiha, no extra Surah. Bow, sujood, stand.
ENDING THE PRAYER
After last sujood in rakah 4:
- Sit and repeat Tashahhud
- Say "Allahumma salli ala Muhammad..." Skip for now if hard
- Turn head right: "Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah"
- Turn head left: "Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah"
Done. You prayed.
How Many Rakahs for Each Prayer?
This confuses everyone. Save this:
- Fajr: 2 rakahs
- Dhuhr: 4 rakahs
- Asr: 4 rakahs
- Maghrib: 3 rakahs
- Isha: 4 rakahs
As a New Muslim, if 4 is too much, start with 2 and build up. God loves consistency.
The 7 Mistakes Every New Muslim Makes in Prayer
- Waiting to be perfect: Start now with what you know.
- Praying too fast: Take 5 minutes. This is your break.
- Thinking about everything during prayer: Your mind will wander. Bring it back. That’s the workout.
- Not asking for help: Text a Muslim friend: "Can you watch me pray on video?"
- Missing prayers because you feel dirty: Make wudu and go.
- Thinking one mistake ruins it: It doesn’t. Repent and continue.
- Praying only when you "feel spiritual": Pray even when you don’t feel it. That’s when it counts most.
A 7-Day Plan to Learn Prayer
Don’t learn everything in one day.
Day 1-2: Learn Wudu + Al-Fatiha. Pray 1 prayer.
Day 3-4: Learn Ruku and Sujood words. Pray 2 prayers.
Day 5-6: Learn Tashahhud. Pray 3 prayers.
Day 7: Try all 5. Even if messy.
Record yourself. Watch it. You’ll improve.
What to Do When You Forget or Mess Up
- Forgot a step? Just continue.
- Doubted how many rakahs? Pick the lower number.
- Laughed or talked? Prayer is broken. Make wudu and repeat.
- Cried? That’s the best prayer.
God says: "My mercy overcomes My wrath."
Praying at Work, School, and in Public
This is real life for New Muslims.
- At work: "I need 5 minutes for prayer." Most companies respect that. Find an empty room.
- At school: Ask about a prayer room.
- In public: A park, car, corner of a mall. Put a jacket down.
- On a plane: Pray sitting in your seat if you can’t stand.
Allah made Islam easy. Don’t make it hard.
The Feeling No One Describes
The first time you pray alone, you might cry.
The 10th time, you’ll feel peace.
The 100th time, it will feel like coming home.
Salah is not about the movements. It’s about the 5 minutes where you remember: "I’m not alone. I’m not in control. And that’s okay."
A sister told me: "My first prayer was ugly. I forgot words. But when I said Assalamu alaykum at the end, I felt clean for the first time in years."
Common Questions About How to Pray in Islam
- Can I pray in English? For dua, yes. For Al-Fatiha, you must learn Arabic. But you can read transliteration first.
- What if I don’t have a prayer mat? Any clean surface. A towel. Paper. God cares about your heart.
- Do women and men pray differently? The movements are the same. Minor differences in hand placement. Don’t stress about it now.
- What if my family sees me? Pray in your room. Lock the door. You don’t owe anyone an explanation yet.
- How long does prayer take? 2 rakahs = 3 minutes. 4 rakahs = 6 minutes. That’s it.
After Prayer - 3 Things That Change Everything
Don’t just stand up and run.
- Make dua: In your language. "Ya Allah, help me, guide me, forgive me."
- Dhikr: Say "SubhanAllah" 33x, "Alhamdulillah" 33x, "Allahu Akbar" 34x.
- Reflect: 10 seconds. "What did I just do? I talked to God."
This is what turns prayer from habit to healing.
Conclusion: Inna iqamat al-salah tatahallo makanatan 'azimatan fi al-din al-islami, fa-hiya sila da'imah bayna al-'abd wa Khaliqihi tu'azzizu al-tuma'ninah fi al-qalb wa tunadi al-nafs ila al-istiqamah, mu'akkidatan anna al-tayar al-ruhiy alladhi yajiduho al-insan fi al-salah huwa al-mawi' al-haqiqi li-kulli qalb yabhatuhu 'an al-salam wa al-tatawwur.
